How to reach Agumbe
Sunset point at Agumbe People travelling from Bangalore should reach the city Shimoga first. The distance between Bangalore and Shimoga is 280Kms. There are two ways to reach Shimoga from Bangalore.
First one is to proceed towards Tumkur (70 Kms from Bangalore on National Highway 4) and take diversion towards Tiptur (60 Kms from Tumkur) and continue towards Arsikere (35Kms from Tiptur), Kadur (50 Kms from Arsikere), Birur ( 15 Kms from Kadur), Tarikere (25 Kms from Birur), Bhadravati (20 Kms from Tarikere) and reach Shimoga (15Kms from Bhadravati). The second way is to proceed towards Channarayapatna (145Kms from Bangalore on National Highway 48).
Take deviation to right at this place to travel towards Arsikere, Kadur, Birur, Tarikere, Bhadravati and reach Shimoga.

After reaching Shimoga city, proceed towards South-West to reach Thirthahalli (60Kms from Shimoga) and then Agumbe (30Kms from Thirthahalli). Agumbe is 90Kms from Shimoga. Though Agumbe belongs to Shimoga district, it lies almost at the border of Chikmagalur at North-West from Chikmagalur town.

Hindu reformer and exponent of the Advaita Vedanta philosophy. It is located on the banks of the river Tunga, in Karnataka, India. In a popular legend, Adi Sankaracharya is said to have selected the site when, walking by the Tunga river, he saw a cobra with a raised hood, providing shelter from the hot sun, to a frog about to spawn. Four mathas were eventually established by Sankara, in the north (Jyotirmath, near Badrinath), south (Sringeri), east (Puri), and west (Dwaraka) of India.

The name Sringeri is derived from Rishyasringa-giri, a nearby hill that is believed to have contained the hermitage of Rishi Vibhandaka and his son Rishyasringa. Rishyasringa appears in an episode in the Bala-Kanda of the Ramayana where a story, narrated by Vasishta, relates how Rishyasringa brought rains to the drought-stricken kingdom of Romapada.


The most important temple at Sringeri is the Vidyashankara temple, built in the 14th century by Vidyaranya, patron-saint of Harihara and Bukka, the brothers who founded the Vijayanagara empire. Inscriptions in the temple record contributions made by several Vijayanagara emperors, though the temple was probably built on an earlier Hoysala site, and combines the Hoysala and Vijayanagara architectural features.

The whole temple consists of a shrine with a ling at the rear of the hall with a Dravidian sikhara, a flat-roofed mandapa supported by sixteen pillars, a separate porch for Nandi surrounded by an open-court entered through a low gopura. There are two Dhvajastambhas (pillars with the flagstaff) in the courtyard. The grand sculpture of Ravana attempting to lift Mount Kailasa, the abode of Lord Shiva, with his full might is a landmark in Indian art.

All the carvings are done in more than one level. The lower storey consists of several large shrines while the gallery along the three sides at the rear contains huge sculpted panels. A two-storeyed gateway on the west side provides access to the main temple and the Nandi Mandapa, both on the same level, and is approximately seven meters high. The lower storey of the main temple as well as the Nandi Shrine are solid and cannot be entered. Stone bridges carved from the living rock connect the Nandi pavilion and the entrance porch of the temple. The main temple has a southern style superstructure. The lower storey has almost life-size elephants carved as if they are holding up the temple.

Vivekananda Rock Memorial
Vivekananda Rock Memorial is another place in Kanyakumari which attracts large number of tourists. As its name implies, it is essentially a sacred monument, built by the Vivekananda Rock Memorial Committee to commemorate the visit of Swamy Vivekananda to - Shripada Parai - during 24th, 25th and 26th December 1892 for deep meditation and enlightenment.

Jog Falls: World famous Jog falls (Jogada Gundi or Joga Jalapaata in Kannada) is the most thrilling spectacle in the entire western region of Karnataka.

Jog falls is around 105 kms away from Shimoga. The River Sharavathi takes a spectacular leap at a height of 292 m in four distinct falls - Raja, Rani, Rocket and Roarer - to form the fifth highest waterfall in Asia.

The four streams are named in accordance with their perceived trajectories:

1. Raja (King): Named so because of its apparently 'dignified' and 'serene' fall.
2. Rani (Queen), also called Lady: The stream has a winding, twisting trajectory, said to resemble the movements of a female dancer.
3. Roarer: This stream appears out of a mass of rocks, making a tremendous amount of noise (hence the name).
4. Rocket: Consists of a large volume of water streaming out of a small opening at a very high speed.

Jog falls is one of the must visit places in Karnataka. The best time to visit these falls is soon after the monsoons during July-August. The backwaters of the Sharavati Wildlife Sanctuary offer excellent opportunities for water sports

Kodaikanal is a awsome, a charming hill station, dating from the time the British ruled and needed an alternative for the hot lowlands. It can be reached easily by bus from Madurai. It is a nice change of scenery and the perfect spot to relax, do some hiking or row a boat on the lake. There are some good points from which you can have splendid views of the surroundings (that is, when the clouds don’t take away the view). It can get quite foggy but normally it does not get really cold, so you don’t have to carry a round winter coats.

In order to reach Kodaikanal, you have to take the bus. As you might gather, the road to the top is a small and winding one that does offer astonishing views but at the same time makes you believe that this will be your final destination as well.
